Surfaces Utiles partage des pratiques artistiques et graphiques qui se situent à la frontière entre professionnalisme et amateurisme et qui jouent avec les limites du langage écrit. Chaque nouvelle publication est aussi pour la maison d’édition l’occasion d'expérimenter des modèles économiques alternatifs à l’industrie de l’édition, en complicité avec ses acteur·ices, et notamment par l’appropriation et le détournement des processus d’impressions standardisés. Surfaces Utiles édite notamment La Perruque, une revue de typographie de 1 × 90 cm de long imprimée en douce, dans les marges de tirages offset.

Surfaces Utiles brings to the fore artistic and graphic practices that lie in the grey area between professionalism and amateurism and that play with the limits of written language. With each publication, Surfaces Utiles seeks alternative economic models for the publishing industry in complicity with its actors, especially by appropriating and hacking standardized printing processes. With similar mindset, Surfaces Utiles publishes La Perruque, a 1 × 90 centimetre-long magazine printed in the margins of regular documents, showcasing nonstandard type specimens.

History

Au courant de l’année 2015, un premier contrat tacite est l’occasion d’obtenir 1 × 90 cm d’espace vierge en marge des impressions courantes de l’imprimeur Media Graphic à Rennes. Depuis cette expérience fondatrice, les matériaux (surfaces d’impression inutilisées) et les techniques de production à grande échelle (impression offset) ont été le terrain de jeu et de collaboration pour les dessinateurices, les imprimeries et l’éditeur de la revue de typographie La Perruque.

Un an après, le modèle économique de la revue est déployé à travers Surfaces Utiles. Avec la volonté de limiter ou de valoriser les restes, la maison d’édition passe une multitude de nouveaux « deals » avec des industriels qui lui permet d’exploiter et de transformer leurs espaces vacants, leurs rebuts ou leurs stocks pour fabriquer des livres. Chez Surfaces Utiles, chaque nouvelle publication est désormais l’occasion de chercher des modèles économiques alternatifs à l’industrie de l’édition, en complicité avec ses acteurices, et notamment par l’appropriation et le détournement des processus d’impressions standardisés.

C’est à l’intérieur de cette dynamique expérimentale qu’elle publie : en rendant possible des collaborations inattendues entre des pratiques dites de « bidouilles » et une industrie rodée et puissante. Surfaces Utiles ouvre alors un espace de discussion avec des artistes et des designers qui questionnent le statut de ces « objets de peu » en les revalorisant par des gestes économes.

Year 2015. A first unspoken agreement with an offset printer allows Olivier Bertrand to use a blank surface in the margins of a regular print. Ever since that founding experience, materials (unused print surfaces) and large scale production techniques (offset printing) have been the playgrounds for type designers and Olivier to collaborate in publishing La Perruque, a 1 × 90 cm-long magazine publishing nonstandard type specimens printed in the margins of regular documents.

A year later, this production method was continued with the launch of Surfaces Utiles presses. Over the months, the publisher strikes a number of deals with printers and other suppliers (paper factories, print-on-demand services, binders), which make available their unused materials so they are turned into books instead of waste. Since then, Surfaces Utiles experiments with alternative economic models for the publishing industry, appropriating and diverting standardised processes. What is at hand dictates what is made.

It is within this experimental dynamic, and with a keen awareness of the material and environmental responsibilities of such a practice, that Surfaces Utiles emerges, working with artists and designers interested in leftovers and economic issues.

The catalogue for the countryside exhibition of Benjamin De Backer and Diego Thielemans at the Multiplexe. The installation is made up a collection of painted wooden objects at a monumental size that are intended for film projection—self-supporting and self-sustaining; equipped with screens and projection stands.
‍
Wandering about from object to object, this catalogue recreates both the feeling of visiting as well as the circulation of light between the interior and exterior of the Multiplexe, this atypical exhibition pavilion overlooking a countryside right out of a flemish painting through its walls of frosted glass and wooden openwork.
‍
So what is it really about? A bluff, a throw of the dice. In a book that rigorously takes on the format of an “established” (or almost established) artist’s catalogue, the way that the models are presented conceals any hint of their actual scale, which is probably much smaller. From page to page, the book invents a big, very big even, exhibition.
‍
Just like “artist-run spaces” that allow artists to present their work without having to wait for established institutions to take an interest in their own practice, this book appropriates and makes visible the different elements that constitute the exhibition catalogue type (overviews, details, theoretical texts, etc.), all the while taking advantage of its capacity as a form of validation.
‍
Surfaces Utiles, true to its usual approach, takes full responsibility for this critical exercise that resembles a masquerade in which everyone who has participated in the making of this book, from its conception to its distribution, is made complicit.

Le catalogue de l’exposition champêtre de Benjamin De Backer et Diego Thielemans au Multiplexe. L’installation comprenait un ensemble de mobiliers monumentaux en bois peint destinés à la projection de films – autoportants et autonomes : équipés d’un écran et d’un support pour le projecteur.
‍
Déambulant autour du mobilier, ce catalogue restitue également le sens de la visite et la circulation de la lumière entre l’intérieur et l’extérieur du Multiplexe, ce pavillon d’exposition atypique donnant sur une campagne de peinture flamande au travers de ses parois de verre dépoli et de bois ajouré…

Ce dont il s’agit réellement? Un coup de bluff, un coup de dé. Dans un livre qui prend rigoureusement les formes d’un catalogue d’artiste «établi» ou presque, les maquettes sont présentées en dissimulant les indices qui permettraient d’en connaître l’échelle réelle, probablement bien plus petite. De pages en pages, le livre invente une grande, une très grande exposition.

À l’image des artist-run spaces qui permettent aux artistes de présenter leur travail sans attendre que les institutions établies ne s’intéressent à leurs pratiques pour les faire exister, le livre s’approprie et rend sensibles les différents éléments constitutifs d’un catalogue d’exposition type (vues d’ensemble, détails, texte théorique, etc.), tout en tirant parti de sa qualité d’instance de validation.
‍
Surfaces Utiles, fidèle à ses stratégies habituelles, endosse la responsabilité de cet exercice critique aux allures de mascarade pour lequel l’ensemble des acteurs du livre, de sa conception et à sa diffusion, se sont rendus complices.
