Imperium est une interprétation narrative de l’exposition éponyme de Benjamin Installé au Botanique. L’artiste y déployait un ambitieux travail de peinture qui occupait tout l’espace de la galerie du Botanique. À mi-chemin entre le tableau d’Histoire de grande dimension, le décor de scène de théâtre et la cimaise architecturale, l’œuvre principale de l’exposition représente un espace délaissé, jonché d’objets ayant de toute évidence été abandonnés par leurs propriétaires en attendant un hypothétique retour. Les occupants du tableau s’étant absentés sont probablement des travailleurs de l’art, mais peuvent tout aussi bien être des ouvriers du bâtiment, des livreurs ou des sans-abris. Ils ont abandonné le chantier à la fin de leur journée de travail, ou bien nous arrivons simplement après la fête et tout le monde est parti soigner sa gueule de bois. 

Imperium is a narrative interpretation of the eponymous exhibition by Benjamin Installé at Botanique. In this exhibition, Benjamin Installé displayed ambitious painting, which occupied the entirety of the Botanique Gallery. Somewhere between a large-scale historical scene, the backdrop of a play and cymatium mouldings, the focal piece of the exhibition represents a deserted space, littered with objects that have clearly been left behind by their owners and await their hypothetical return. The occupants of the painting—artists, construction workers, delivery workers or homeless people—have gone. They might have simply left their place of work at the end of the day, or perhaps we arrive just after the party has ended and everyone has already gone home to nurse a hangover.
